In summer, the problem of household leakage is highlighted again due to repeated rainstorm, and doors and windows are the high-risk areas. Why is it difficult to avoid door and window leakage? How to reduce the possibility of leakage during home decoration?
When doors and windows leave the factory or there are hidden dangers present
Causing leakage may be due to hidden dangers present in some doors and windows when they leave the factory.
One is that the quality of door and window materials is not up to standard. Due to manufacturers cutting corners and materials, door and window products are severely deformed, and glass glue and sealing materials are prone to aging, which can easily lead to water leakage during installation.
The second issue is that the production process of doors and windows is not up to standard. Some small manufacturers are limited by technology, such as imprecise material cutting dimensions, which can easily lead to joint gaps or processing loopholes in the assembly process of doors and windows.
The third issue is that the structural design of doors and windows is not up to standard. The design of product structure is a fundamental issue, and whether doors and windows have a fast drainage route directly determines the quality of the product.
There are more installation issues than product issues
With the progress and development of the door and window industry and the improvement of door and window technology, the leakage directly caused by door and window product problems is decreasing, and the proportion of leakage caused by door and window installation is gradually increasing.
Why is that? Doors, windows, and cement are made of completely different materials, with completely different coefficients of thermal expansion and contraction. Therefore, problems are prone to occur at the junction of doors, windows, and walls. During installation, sealing materials and fillers should be properly filled.
Normal door and window products need to undergo waterproofing treatment on the opening before installation to ensure waterproofing at the opening, and then proceed with the installation of the door and window. After installation, the filling of waterproof mortar, foaming agent, and sealing of internal and external structural sealant must be strictly carried out in accordance with the standards. Any step that is not done or omitted will leave serious leakage hazards.
Don't take advantage of small things and lose out on big things
The difference in appearance between glass doors and windows of different brands is not significant, but the material may vary significantly. If you buy some shoddy doors and windows at a low price, you may lose out on the bigger picture.
According to the introduction, there are many types of materials that make up door and window products, but they are mainly divided into the following five categories:
One is aluminum material. The main aluminum material required by national standards for doors and windows is 6 series aluminum alloy, namely silicon magnesium aluminum alloy, with an aluminum element content requirement of more than 99.7%. However, some door and window manufacturers on the market use recycled aluminum for extrusion to save costs. As the main profile of their doors and windows, it is much inferior in strength, extrusion quality, and surface durability compared to native aluminum. Therefore, when purchasing doors and windows, the aluminum supply channel of the door and window factory is the primary consideration.
The second is glass. In recent years, incidents of building glass shattering and injuring people have been common. The country has clear requirements for the glass of building exterior doors and windows, requiring the use of safety glass, namely tempered glass. However, tempered glass itself also has a certain self explosion rate (about 3 ‰), so it is recommended that glass raw materials and tempered manufacturers choose large brands.
The third is hardware components. Hardware components determine the durability and safety of doors and windows, and large brand products have better quality assurance. When purchasing, attention should be paid to the user experience, such as the flexibility of the handle opening and closing, the smoothness of the window sash closing, whether stainless steel hardware is rusty, etc. Also, attention should be paid to whether the functional accessories of the hardware are complete, such as whether doors and windows have anti falling devices, and whether there are child protection configurations.
The fourth is the sealing strip. There are many types of sealing tape materials on the market, such as PVC, EPDM, silicone, etc. Among them, silicone material has the best weather resistance and elasticity, but the corresponding cost is very high; EPDM has excellent weather resistance and elasticity, with moderate cost; PVC strips have the worst weather resistance and elasticity, are cheap but not environmentally friendly. So on the market, EPDM adhesive strips are mainly used, and there are also manufacturers who use PVC adhesive strips to substitute inferior ones.
Five is sealant. There are two types of sealants: one is neutral silicone sealant suitable for glass sealing, which has good adhesion with glass and aluminum materials. Good quality sealants can ensure stable adhesion within 2-3 years, while poor quality sealants can peel off within six months, causing rainwater to leak into doors and windows. Some manufacturers choose acidic glass adhesive to ensure construction progress. Acidic glass adhesive has certain corrosiveness to the surface of glass and profiles, and can release acidic gases, which are harmful to the environment and human health. Therefore, neutral silicone sealant must be selected.
Another type of sealant is used for wall sealing and sealing after installation of doors and windows. Usually, installation workers will directly use neutral silicone sealant, but this type of sealant has more than enough sealing, compatibility and strength are insufficient. In this case, neutral silicone structural adhesive should be used, which has both sealing and strength effects.
Construction standards reduce the possibility of leakage
Of course, good doors and windows also need to be matched with good installation techniques to achieve good usage effects.
There are two points to pay special attention to during the installation of doors and windows: first, the waterproofing treatment of the door and window openings. Before installing the doors and windows, waterproof coatings should be applied to the indoor and outdoor walls of the door and window openings, as well as the inner walls of the openings; The second is to seal the installation holes of doors and windows and fill the gaps between them and the wall. Filling the gaps between doors and windows with waterproof mortar can minimize the possibility of water seepage and improve the stability of door and window installation. If conditions do not allow, foam can be filled, but structural adhesive must be applied to seal the gaps between the outer windows and the wall.
Discovering leakage requires both window and wall treatment
Professionals believe that leakage caused solely by door and window issues is easier to handle. Find the leakage point and seal it with sealant. At the same time, consult a professional or a door and window company to do a good job in drainage technology, ensuring that there is blockage and drainage. If it is due to wall leakage, inability to drain, etc., it is necessary to re waterproof and seal the outer wall side.
A good company will consider rainwater leakage as an important after-sales issue of concern, and professionals and professional teams will jointly develop a solution plan in the first time to quickly solve the problem of door and window leakage.
When encountering leakage of doors and windows caused by external walls, the best solution is to repair the entire exterior wall of the building. However, this requires the installation of external wall scaffolding, which is difficult to carry out without the leadership of government departments or the consent of all owners.
If the following precautions are taken during daily use, the service life of doors and windows can be effectively extended: first, pay attention to maintaining the hardware of doors and windows, and do not forcefully damage or use them abnormally; Secondly, the garbage at the drainage positions of doors and windows should be cleaned up in a timely manner to avoid blocking the drainage channels; Finally, the sealing material surface at the glass and wall must not be damaged to prevent sealing failure.
